Banana Breastmilk Oatmeal Recipe

Before giving anything other than breastmilk or formula to your infant please consult with your baby’s pediatrician. This recipe is a suggestion and something I have fed to my baby with the approval of her pediatrician. I have also done this with my first daughter who is now over 2 years old. Most pediatricians state that babies can be ready for purees and solids as early as 4-6 months. This is based off of their ability to be able to sit up with little to no assistance, showing interest in eating, reaching for the spoon and opening their mouth when food is given.

Please keep in mind my daughter is still drinking breastmilk while nursing or from a bottle. The purees I give her are after she has ingested my milk and I also include my breastmilk in the purees I prepare for her. Also note that small amounts of water (.5 to 1 Ounce) are okay for your baby. As long as your baby does not ingest water directly while drinking breastmilk or formula it will not dilute his or her caloric intake. Water is used to flush the mouth and system of your baby and as long as you are careful about when you are giving it to your baby it will not be a problem for their growth. Please NOTE: Banana may make baby constipated if this occurs please reduce the amount used or stop use altogether.

WARNING: (Do not give water instead of formula or breastmilk) Only give water in between feedings, never before or directly after baby has been feed by breast or bottle. This can dilute their caloric intake and result in weight loss or malnutrition. Use of small amounts of water while preparing purees or solids is okay.

Recipe:

  • .5 Ounce of Breastmilk or Filtered Water
  • .5 or 1 tablespoons of Blended Gluten Free Organic Rolled Oats
  • A few Slices of a Banana to help thicken the mixture if it seems a bit watery or thin.

Directions:

  1. Place blended oats into a serving container.
  2. Add breastmilk and mix until combined.
  3. Slice banana, add and mash until desired consistency is reached.

Notes: First I blended up 1/2 cup portions of rolled oats until it became a fine powder and added into an air tight glass jar for storage.

I then added the blended oats to a glass serving dish and mixed with breastmilk until desired consistency was reached. I then put a few slices of banana and mashed all together to help thicken the mixture. Before feeding I separated some of the mixture into baby food jars for the next feeding. I also did this to avoid contamination in case she did not finish the full amount. If you would like to make a smaller or larger portion you can adjust the amount of blended oats used. To adjust the consistency use more or less banana slices. See Dry/Weight Measuring table suggestions below found online via Google.
